Personal upheavals decrease your work and leadership capacity.
A painful life disruption from burnout, grief, trauma, difficult divorce, or other critical stressors affects how you lead and function at work, while most people around you expect you to show up as normal.
When you are going through a personal upheaval, you may become overwhelmed, withdrawn, or irritable. These normal biological responses take a toll on your work.
I coach leaders to regain capacity and protect their work and leadership as they walk through this difficult and painful life experience.
Some personal upheavals that dramatically affect work capacity:
Traumatic Grief
Depending on the nature of your relationship and the manner of loss, this is the sadness, vacuum, pain, anger, or shutdown you feel at losing someone you loved unexpectedly or someone close who hurt you.
You will experience emotional, cognitive, and physical reactions such as fatigue and withdrawal or pain, confusion, and lack of trust, or sometimes you will experience PTSD.
Contentious Divorce
Depending on the reasons and manner of divorce, you may feel hurt, angry, and relieved.
Based on the nature of the relationship, you may feel sad, pained, angry, tired, or sometimes have cPTSD. If there are children involved, you may feel exhausted.
At work, you may find it difficult to focus, meet deadlines, or feel unmotivated.
Burnout
This is severe emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion from prolonged or excessive stress, from work or intense personal pressure.
You may have body pain, trouble sleeping, and racing heartbeats.
At work, you may make fast errors, feel irritable, and be unable to make decisions.

The Leadership Cost of Sustained High-Stakes Pressure
Your work does not pause for grief, loss, or personal upheaval. You are still making the decisions. You are still protecting your people. But you can sense that your biological cost is mounting.
-
Cognitive Friction: Decisions that used to be intuitive now feel heavy and labored.
-
The Energy Shift: You are "showing up," but your presence feels rigid or brittle.
-
Survival Mode: Your nervous system is prioritizing survival over strategy—a predictable biological response, not a personal decline.
When the stakes are this high, "powering through" is a liability.
