We pursue excellence because of the following passages in Scriptures

Philippians 4:8, 1 Corinthians 10:31, 2 Peter 1:5

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things. So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge. . .

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, because there is neither work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave, the place where you will eventually go.
